This story specifically resonated with me because my family lived in Bucharest Romania (Where this story takes place) for a couple months. As I was reading I could recognize many of the places that were mentioned and have been to many of them. I could imagine very vividly what it was like to live in Communist Romania, wait for hours in line just to get a few tiny potatoes, constantly be afraid that the government was listening in on conversations, and watch illegal movies under the cover of darkness. I hope you can too.
Cristian Florescu’s dream is to become a writer. But he lives in Communist Romania where the people are bound by rules and regulations. The houses are bugged with listening devices. Families have to wait in long lines to get food. Medicine is hard to come by. And everyone buys things off the black market. The government has spies everywhere, they are always watching. Even the people you think are your closest friends. Then one day Cristian’s whole life changes and he is forced to do what only traitors do. He has become an informer.
Recommended for mature readers ages 13 and up as this story deals with very hard topics.
