Okay for Now by Gary. D. Schmidt is the first book I read of his and since then I have been hooked! His sense of death and humor is fantastic and one of my favorite things about his books.
Doug Swieteck and his family have to move to a whole new town, and well, lets just say he’s not totally hyped about it. He doesn’t have a good relationship with his father and so tries to stay as far away from him as humanly possible. His older brother is a jerk and his oldest brother is away fighting in the Vietnam War. Things aren’t going well for him, he had to start the year at a brand new school, he hates school, his new house is a dump, and to top it all of he can’t… Well, you’ll have to figure that part out for yourself.
His life in ‘Stupid Marysville’ is off to a bad start. That is until he ventures into the library and sees one of John James Audubon’s art pieces. The Arctic Tern. And that picture changes his life.
Okay for Now is full of emotion, friendship, love, and humor. It will leave you feeling slightly melancholy, but somehow filled with joy. I wasn’t able to put this book down, and I hope you can’t either.
Happy Reading!
