The Wednesday Wars is one of my all time favorite books. And I read a lot of books!
It combines two of my favorite things: Shakespeare’s plays, and creampuffs. Yes, creampuffs.
You’ll just have to read the book to know what I’m talking about.
The Wednesday Wars is a very comical story, I was laughing out loud at least once every chapter. But at the same time there were points that were extremely sweet and made my little heart fill to the brim.
Gary D. Schmidt has a very interesting and unique style of writing. A lot of his books are written from the perspective of a middle school boy, which to some of you might seem a little strange, and might make you wonder if you will actually like the book. But none of his humor is inappropriate or dumb, and his shorter sentances make everything even more funny.
In the book, Holling Hoodhood is convinced that his teacher, Mrs. Baker hates his guts. (This phrase is repeated a lot!) :)
He is the only Presbetarian in his class, and on Wednesdays he watches all his classmates either go to catechism or Tora school. And guess who he gets stuck with during the last few hours of school? Mrs. Baker, who hates his guts. She even makes him read Shakespeare!
Throughout the book he ends up in many sticky situations, for example: Owing his class two dozen cream puffs, and having a picture posted all over school with him wearing yellow tights with white feathers on the… well, you’ll find out.
Set in 1967 the Korean war was also going on, and people had to deal with the thought that any day a telegram could come in the mail bearing news of a lost loved one.
Will Holling come to appreciate his teacher who supposedly hates his guts? Can he supply the two dozen cream puffs? I suppose you should read the book and find out for yourself!
P.s. Be sure to watch out for the two evil rats Sycorax and Caliban! :)
Happy reading!
